Popular Tyrrhenian University of Natural Sciences – activities and projects

The Popular Tyrrhenian University of Natural Sciences (www.uptsn.eu) was founded in 1999 and since then works in the Natural Sciences sector with initiatives and projects related to the natural field and especially to the sea world. U.P.T.S.N. is confederated to C.N.U.P.I. (National Confederation of Italian Popular Universities) and, for this, it has prerogatives of a didactic and international research institution. The main intent of U.P.T.S.N. is then the cultural diffusion about the themes of natural and marine field and, for this reason, teaching in the schools of every grading and their involving in every in the projects, is considered peculiar. So the educational plans were born: for instance “Blueschool” in 2001 and “Gems in the hall” in 2003, 2005, 2006 and now on October 2009: these events were inside larger projects named “Gems in the Blue II”, “Gems in the Blue III ” and "Gems in the Blue IV", that involved thousands of students, with frontal lessons based on multimedial showing and the final visit at the shells show.
But U.P.T.S.N. isn’t only instruction ‘cause one important aspect of the activities is given by research on field. Among them the research campaigns in regard of the malacofauna and benthofauna, along the coasts of Albania in 2002 and in Greecian Zakinthos island during the summer of 2003, and the continuous monitoring on the malacofauna of the sea area in front of the province of Latina in Lazio, with particular attention to submerged barriers put in place some years ago to promote the nourishment of eroded beaches.
But what has characterized the UPTSN activity, since its birth, was the organization of "Gems in the Blue – show on shells and marine - terrestrial biodiversity"
This event is now a point of reference that, every two years, is proposed to citizenship and the student population, and it’s today one of the largest events in Lazio and Italy on these themes. Tens of thousands of shells from around the world are exposed, with collections of considerable value, collections of echinoderms, crustaceans, starfish and corals. And in addition, there are large sections on sharks, shell and coral handicrafts, entomological collections with butterflies and beetles, and more.
The 5th edition of "Gems in the Blue" will be held this year in Latina from October 18 to November 8 (for all the necessary references www.gemmenelblu.org)

L’Università Popolare Tirrenica delle Scienze Naturali – attività e progetti

L’Università Popolare Tirrenica delle Scienze Naturali (www.uptsn.eu) fu istituita nell’anno 1999 e da allora opera nel settore delle Scienze Naturali con iniziative e progetti inerenti tematiche proprie dell’ambiente naturale e soprattutto marino. L’U.P.T.S.N. è confederata nella C.N.U.P.I. (Confederazione Nazionale delle Università Popolari Italiane) ed attraverso questa gode di prerogative proprie di un ente di formazione e di ricerca internazionale.
Lo scopo principale dell’U.P.T.S.N. è, quindi, quello della divulgazione culturale delle tematiche dell’ambiente naturale e soprattutto marino, e, per questo, una delle sue principali prerogative è l’insegnamento nelle scuole di ogni ordine e grado ed il coinvolgimento degli Istituti Scolastici nei progetti. Ecco allora i progetti educativi “Scuolablu” nel 2001 e “Gemme in Aula” nel 2003, nel 2005, nel 2006 e nel prossimo ottobre 2009. Queste ultime iniziative erano all’interno dei progetti “Gemme nel Blu II ”, “Gemme nel Blu III” e "Gemme nel Blu IV", ed hanno coinvolto diverse migliaia di alunni, con lezioni frontali con proiezioni multimediali e la visita finale alle due mostre.
Ma l’U.P.T.S.N. non è solo istruzione poiché un aspetto importante delle sue attività è dato dalle ricerche svolte sul campo. Tra queste i due campi di ricerca sulla malacofauna e bentofauna, prima lungo le coste dell’Albania, nel 2002 e poi in Grecia, nell’isola di Zante nel 2003 ed i continui monitoraggi sulla malacofauna del comprensorio laziale antistante la provincia di Latina, con particolare attenzione alle barriere suffolte poste in opera alcuni anni fa per favorire il ripascimento delle spiagge erose.
Ma ciò che ha caratterizzato l’attività dell’UPTSN fin dalla sua nascita è stata l’organizzazione di “Gemme nel Blu - mostra malacologica e sulla biodiversità marina e terrestre”
Tale manifestazione rappresenta ormai un punto di riferimento certo che con cadenza biennale, viene riproposto alla cittadinanza ed alla popolazione studentesca e rappresenta, oggi, uno dei maggiori eventi del genere nel Lazio ed in Italia. Vengono esposte decine di migliaia di conchiglie di tutto il mondo, con collezioni di notevole valore, collezioni di echinodermi, crostacei, stelle marine, coralli e madrepore. Ed oltre a ciò vi sono ampie sezioni su: squali, artigianato della conchiglia e del corallo, collezioni entomologiche con farfalle e coleotteri e molto altro ancora.
